Crash and Burn....oh, and Jason Mraz

Bad news. Yesterday, I promised a review of the Jason Mraz concert (which I will uphold), but you'll have to live without the "complete with video" part.

Why, you ask? Well I had a bit of bad luck last night. My precious and trusted MacBook decided to bail on me; as in, my hard drive crashed. One minute I was happily burning a CD, and the next, folder icon with flashing question mark. Two hours on the phone with AppleCare later, I came to the realization that I'd have to live without two years worth of documents, songs, pictures, etc, etc. And included under that first "etc" are the videos that I recorded at the aforementionted Jason Mraz concert.

Anyway, that's really all I can say about my traumatic experience before the tears start to flow (again). So I will move on to the concert.

Basically I can sum up the night with this: Jason had the right stuff, but the wrong venue. I absolutely love the Fox Theatre, and have attended numerous musicals there over the years. However, from our seats in the balcony, I felt more like I was watching a television broadcast of the concert in my old high school gymnasium with the people around me. And let's just say they aren't exactly the people I'd choose to watch even a concert on tv with.

I say this because the sound didn't really reach us very well up in the nosebleeds. We could hear, but we weren't immersed in it the way you are meant to be at a concert. But the music itself was awesome. Jason played mostly from his newest album, We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things, which I love but can't top his debut, Waiting for My Rocket. He did play one of his first hits, "The Remedy," which he infused with Oasis' "Wonderwall". Very cool. "Lucky", the song Zach and I danced to at our wedding, was one of the last songs, as was "I'm Yours" which is one of my favorites to perform. He did a cool call-and-response at the end of that song, which probably would have been a lot more fun had we better seats.

I'd have to say that out of the three Jason Mraz concerts I've seen, this ranks third. Zach and I agree that we prefer Jason in an all-acoustic setting, like the show we saw at Milikin University in 2005.

So that's that. It's been a long week, and I'm thankful that it's Friday. After this weekend, which is packed with obligations and errands, I'll have some time to get back to songwriting. I miss it!

  1. Ouch. This happened to me once. Now I'm a backup maniac. You can get an external hard drive for less than $100 now.

I use this one for my backups: Wolverine-Portable-120GB-External

Not sure if it's still available, but there are many others.

    So sorry... JF

  2. Oh trust me, that will be my very next purchase as soon as I finish rebuilding my new hard drive. Thanks for the link - I will check that one out!

  3. One more thing- If you have really valuable files on there, they are not really "gone". Your operating system just can't find them anymore. If you think it's worth it, you can pay someone to extract your data from the dead drive. My brother-in-law did it once when his computer died. I think it cost him like $300. Google "data recovery" and you'll find lots of services, probably some locally in your yellow pages too :)
